Owing to a lack of form and consistency, the German centre back had fallen out of favour under his old boss Unai Emery. The lack lustre performance of the club as a whole didn’t help his cause either. Under Unai Emery, Mustafi ended up playing only 47 games.

“That's something the club has to address but he knows my opinion, I'm really happy with him as you can see. The way he's playing, how committed he is with everything we're trying to do, the level in his performance ever three or four days, he's been really consistent” said the current Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta. The German international was offered a new contract as he was clearly in the plans of Mikel Arteta. However, Shkodran Mustafi has refused to sign the new contract offered to him over the summer and has chosen to leave the English Club for free.

Mustafi last appeared for the gunners in the 1-0 defeat against Leicester City in which he replaced the injured David Luiz. With fixtures in the Europa League and the Premier league coming thick and fast, the departure of a tried and tested player such as Mustafi could be a huge blow for Arsenal who will at least look to compete for the top 4 spots in the Premier League.
At only 28 year old, Shkodran Mustafi has yet to give a lot to the world of football. Some might even say that his peak years are yet to come. A report says that Mustafi is keen on a move to Italy.
