Despite scoring 10 goals in the last five matches of the English Premier League, Chelsea have managed to secure only one win out of those five matches. After spending over 200 million pounds on six major signings, securing only three points out of a possible fifteen is not what Chelsea Manager Frank Lampard would have hoped for.

This year the Premier League is already turning out to be an unexpected one with big teams dropping points all around. Many teams have found a way to penetrate the defences of the big teams and upset them. Chelsea are very well aware of this situation with managing a win only against Crystal Palace in their past five matches and drawing four of them. Part of the blame goes to poor defending and the other part of the blame goes to pragmatic tactics used by Frank Lampard.
Chelsea have signed three new players to strengthen their defences namely Edouard Mendy(GK), Ben Chilwell(LB) and Thiago Silva(CB). Little can be done about the defending aspect as strong defences require time to establish themselves by forming strong partnerships and coherent dynamics to stop the opponents. Due to this lack of defensive assertiveness, the only choice that Frank Lampard seems to have is to strengthen their attack.
Chelsea have plenty of attacking players to choose from in order to outscore the opponents. Frank Lampard could form a partnership in the striker position instead of using Timo Werner as the sole striker. With the devastating pace and the clinical finishing that Werner possesses, forming a partnership with Olivier Giroud or Tammy Abraham will only benefit the team in terms of outscoring the opponents. Having a partnership upfront will also benefit the likes of Mason Mount, Christian Pulisic, Kai Havertz, Callum Hudson Odoi and Hakim Ziyech on the wings who will now not only have more options in the box for crosses and through balls but they can also play off the strikers.
Every plan has two sides to it and likewise increasing attacking options will definitely leave Chelsea at a high risk of conceding goals. However the defensive struggles of Chelsea this season are not a mystery to anyone and hence it might be the time for Chelsea to focus on outscoring the opponents rather than keeping a clean sheet.
