Liverpool grabbed an important win against Midtjylland at home in Champions League group stage. They won 2:0 thanks to goals apiece from Diogo Jota in the first half and a penalty goal from Mo Salah.
But Liverpool suffered a major injury setback after their centre back Fabinho had to leave the field out injured at the 30th minute of the match.
Fabinho has been playing in the centre back position for Liverpool after the ACL injury of Virgil Van Dijk. There is yet to be any update from the scan results but by the looks of it, he will be out for the whole season.
After the match at press conference Liverpool Boss Jurgen Klopp admitted Fabinho's injury was "exactly the last thing we needed" as Liverpool's defensive issues worsened. Matip is out injured. Last summer Dejan Lovren was sold. The only fit centre back available is Joe Gomez who is actually a right back. These major injury set back in Liverpool will be breathing down Klopp's neck.
Liverpool depends heavily on Virgil Van Dijk. He is the most reliable and regular centre back for Liverpool. He featured in consecutive 68 matches before losing out to injury.
Shaky Premier League start
Liverpool started the season with defensive calamity. They grabbed a narrow 4:3 against Leeds United at the opening fixture of Premier League. His side was exposed wide open.
They also lost 7-2 against Aston Villa. They managed a draw (2:2) against Everton but at the cost of their regular centre backs long term injury.
Much to their defensive woes, they don't have any more natural regular centre-backs. Klopp has no option but to look for the reserve bench for players. The academy players will be tried out before their very important game against West Ham at the weekend.
Can Liverpool still win the Premier League?
The answer is yes.
Liverpool can somewhat easily steer through the Champions League group campaign but they have to work hard for Premier League. Premier League is more competitive than ever for the title in the last 2-3 years. There is no monopoly of Manchester City anymore. Chelsea, Tottenham, Everton, Leister City all are improving and looking for the throne. Teams like Leeds United, West Ham, Aston Villa are emerging out to cause upset every other week.
But Jurgen Klopp built this sporting project for 5 years. He worked closely with the academy. Klopp appeared to admit, would be one of Williams, Nathaniel Phillips or 17-year-old Billy Koumetio, who only signed his first professional contract with Liverpool in August and has made just one appearance for the club above U18 level.
He should not have much problem finding a natural CB until Fabinho returns. Because as it seems Virgil will miss the whole season to injury.
Jurgen Klopp has developed a system that is very flexible and very hardworking. They can tweak their defensive formation with the experience of Alexander Trent Arlont at Right back and Andy Robertson at the Left-back. With the return of regular goalkeeper Allison, they have that stability in between the sticks. They have players like Jordan Henderson who can fit the centre back position with his calm defensive organization skills. There will be solutions available at Klopp's hand. But still, there will be some concerns.
