Isco's situation at Real Madrid is getting worse. He is not getting game time. Isco is starting to realize that it's time for him to go to get back on the pitch. The Malaga-born playmaker has taken the Bale role of recent seasons - sitting on the bench.
Isco wants to leave but he has no offers on the table. But according to recent reports, Arsenal is eager to have the playmaker in their team. Many teams are following him but his poor performances, when he does get a cameo, are not helping. Juventus, Sevilla, Milan, and Everton are among them, while Arsenal has joined the list because of their deep crisis.
Isco has decided to go in January if he can find a new home. He has been in the spotlight of late, firstly due to making his desire to leave the club known, which has seen him left out of the squad in recent weeks.
But his recent performance against Athletic Bilbao might convince Zidane to keep him till the end of the season. Even though he has a contract until 2022, Madrid will be looking to get his 6.7m euros a season off the wage bill.
When asked Zidane about his situation, the Madrid boss replied,
"Isco is going to be an important player, it is true that he is not playing much and I am not giving him the opportunity to show the player that he is. I feel sorry for my players and I will never forget what I have experienced with them. He has to work hard to get another chance, but what is being said [in the media] I can't respond because we don't control it."
Isco needs a new challenge: Arsenal
Isco should actually look for a new challenge elsewhere if he feels deserted. Because he is 28 years already. These are his peak years. If he is still not an established starter in Madrid after 7 years, he should consider his time elsewhere.
Madrid’s problem could be Arsenal’s solution.
Arsenal is struggling real bad this season. After matchday 13 they sit at 15th place with just 14 points. Mikel Arteta is on the verge of sacking. They are firing empty. Their forwards are not supplied enough to fire in front of the goal. In every match, the opposition shuts down Arsenal in the midfield itself. With Ceballos, Xhaka, Partey, and Willian they are struggling to find their mojo. Ceballos who had a promising start to the season and who was supposed to be the creative midfielder of the team alongside Ozil still looks lost. Ozil, sidelined by Arteta is struggling to even enter the squad list. They have a big empty hole to be filled in the midfield.
Mikel Arteta loves possession-based football. It’s an easy observation as he was part of Pep Guardiola’s coaching team at Manchester City. When Arteta came to Arsenal, there was great optimism about his time. But with what’s going on around Arsenal, the great optimism will fade away soon enough. Arteta needs to do something urgent and fast.
The Real Madrid creative midfielder Isco could be the big solution to Arsenal’s problem. A Madrid midfielder once already dominated Arsene Wenger’s ranks a few years back. Now he warms the bench only. Isco could have similar impacts like Ozil in Arsenal.
Isco, the golden boy winner in 2012, is a gifted player. He can play as an attacking midfielder or as a second striker (like he played in Spain under Loputegi). At Madrid, under Ancelloti he was used as a deep lying playmaker, where he aced. Even Zidane used him similarly and went on to win three consecutive UCL. Isco was an integral part of Real Madrid’s midfield. Zidane even used him as a winger.
He is quick, skillful, and has an excellent ball controlling capability. He is hard to press and his anticipation of space is noteworthy. His diagonal and vertical ball distribution combined with his ability to read the game made him one of the big things in Spain.
Arteta’s Arsenal could be a perfect fit for him. Arteta already has Ceballos in midfield. Isco could easily zill in that position with him. Ceballos is more defensively suited than Isco, so if Isco joins the attack, his defensive duties could be covered by Ceballos. Isco could be used upfront with Aubamayeng and Pep. Isco can play in either wing. He can play behind Auba and Lacazette if Arteta decided to use a diamond upfront. With Isco in their line up, Arteta can deploy him in many ways.
Realize Isco’s and defensive shortcomings and release him in creative duties, he can run a show. Isco fell out with Zidane because of that only. Without proper ammunition in the front three Madrid had to resort to a defensive approach in many games last season and Isco didn’t exactly suit his plan.
But with Arteta Isco will have much more freedom and creative duties. Also, the factor of proving himself in the Premier League will come into consideration. That could work as a boost.
