One of the most valuable players in world football right now and the hottest prospect of the transfer market Kylian Mbappe is currently struggling in European Football.
Right at the moment he just cannot translate the scintillating form of the league to the Champions League, firing another blank on Wednesday night in his side's comfortable 2-0 win over Istanbul Basaksehir.
Mbappe scored 96times for PSG since 2017 in just 131 appearances. He even assisted 50 times. That equals 156 goal involvement in just 131 matches. That's some monstrous statistics. But yet he hasn't scored in the competition since December 2019, when he netted against Galatasaray in last season's group stage. That means he failed to score in all the knockout games of the 2019-20 Champions League campaign where they managed to reach the Final and lost to Bayern Munich.
That's in total is a run of seven games, an unwanted stretch that doesn't tally with a player of his quality. It doesn't mean he played badly in those matches. But he was not decisive enough in front of the goal. He created chances but couldn't convert those created by his teammates.
Mbappe's main strength in PSG is his link-up play with Neymar, Di Maria, Edinson Cavani, and now Icardi. Mbappe and Neymar Jr., both of them link up pretty heavily and frequently in front of the goal. But Mbappe just can't seem to put those in the goal.
During this dry spell time, Mbappe has been on the pitch for 502 minutes and had 15 shots - but to no avail. A big number at the Biggest European Stage.
Against Basaksehir, he had four shots, but three of those were off target and it was Everton loanee Moise Kean who instead netted a quickfire double to get the win for PSG last night.
This season, it's been blanked against Manchester United and Basaksehir, making it now 322 days without a goal in Europe. Mbappe has achieved so much in the game already, but the focus is now on him as he tries to emerge as a big player in the European Nights.
I don't think there is any dip in form for him. He is a very young player with tremendous potential. Not every day a player can perform. It's just a phase and it will pass too. But Bappe will definitely look forward to scoring more often in the Champions League.
Why it's important that he scores in Champions League?
Apart from the fact that PSG would need his goals in the biggest stage, Real Madrid will be looking closely at his performance in Champions League. Real Madrid is the heavyweight to steal Mbappe next summer to reinforce the ranks of Los Blancos. Real Madrid is always hungry for the Champions League and they are someone who gives their all in every competition. After the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo, they are performing not up to their level best at the Champions League. They will be looking for Mbappe to fill the shoes of his idol CR7. But with a bad track record in CL, Mbappe won't imagine his entrance to Santiago Bernabeu.
