Messi and Neymar are two of the best players of our generation and we have been fortunate enough to see them play together in the MSN trio in Barcelona. They had won lots of trophies together, most notably the treble in 2015.
Messi and Neymar produced some of the best football that the world had ever seen. It seemed that there was nothing that the duo couldn’t achieve.
However, a transfer to PSG in 2017 shocked the world as Neymar wanted to try something new and didn’t want to stay under Messi’s shadows. Ever since times have been tough for both the South American superstars and both have failed to win the Champions League ever since.
Both Messi and Neymar have made it clear that they still wanted to play together. Neymar has claimed a number of times that he wanted to join Barcelona to play alongside Messi and win the Champions League. Likewise, Messi has also claimed to leave Barcelona if Neymar wasn’t bought back.
Neymar most recently on 3rd December after his Champions League match against Manchester United said that 'What I want the most is to enjoy playing with him (Messi) again.'
With a laugh, he added: 'He can play in my role, it wouldn't be a problem with me! For sure, next year we have to do it.'
Whether Neymar would go to Barcelona or Messi will be coming to PSG after his contract expires next season is the cause of uncertainty.
Let’s look at the prospect of both the clubs playing both of them together.
Neymar is already a hot target for the next board from even before the election. Bringing Neymar back to Camp Nou would go a huge way towards ensuring the continuation of Messi’s services at Barcelona.
Messi is adamant about leaving Barcelona at the end of the season especially after the departure of Luis Suarez earlier this season.
Bringing Neymar back and uniting Messi and Neymar would also win back the trust of lots of fans who are somewhat unhappy with the club in recent days.
Reportedly several Barcelona players were willing to take a pay cut to facilitate Neymar’s return to the Camp Nou.
However, Carles Tusquets, President of the management committee at Barcelona stated that it would be financially impossible for the club to bring Neymar, especially under these circumstances.
PSG themselves are in a world of worry right now as both their star players Neymar and Mbbappe have not agreed for a contract renewal yet and both of their contracts end in 2022.
Neymar however, is more likely to renew his contract compared to his fellow compatriot Mbappe who has been heavily linked to Real Madrid. Neymar previously was thought to be uninterested with the PSG squad, for which he has received a lot of criticism.
Messi coming to PSG seems more feasible than Neymar going to Barcelona. PSG doesn’t allow their players to leave easily. We can see it with the likes of Edinson Cavani, Thiago Silva, Adrien Rabiot, etc. If Mbappe leaves it would give the club lots of funds to pursue Messi and to unite the two South American stars.
