When will be the election?
The next upcoming Barcelona presidential election will be taking place on 21st and 22nd March 2021. The old date of the presidential election was scheduled in June 2021.
Who can vote in the election?
Only the club members above the age of 18 years and who have been a club member for more than one year can vote in the election for Barcelona’s new president. The club members are called ‘Socis’ in Catalan.
Who are the candidates for the president post?
Victor Font, former president Joan Laporta, Jordi Farre, Toni Freixa, and Lluis Fernandez are the candidates for the post.
Even though Victor Font looks like the favorite; but the campaign of former president Joan Laporta is strengthening. Juan Laporta was the president of Barcelona from 2003-10. One of the most successful era in Barcelona. He revolutionized Barca history with the appointment of Pep Guardiola.
Just before the appointment of Ronald Koeman Laporta even quoted –
"I would very much like Guardiola to come back but now he is at City and it is a decision that Pep should take. He is a benchmark for Barcelona and many Catalans would like him to train Barça again"
Victor Font feels the return of Guardiola is unlikely. He is a strong advocate for Xavi Hernandez. Even though Xavi announced that he doesn’t feel ready to take up the mantle of Barcelona yet; Font believes he could persuade Xavi. Even after the announcement of Ronald Koeman as Barcelona Head Coach, Font quoted he will be bringing back Xavi to the helm.
What happens now?
All the presidential candidates will be given time to present their future plans to the Socios. Elections will be held within 40-90 days of the resignation of the last president.
Carlos Tusquets will be in charge of the club until then and he will be responsible for the conduct of the elections.
Messi and Bartomeu battle comes to an end
After the shocking free transfer request from Leo Messi, Bartomeu made a mess of the situation. Leo Messi wished to activate a clause that allows him to leave him for free at the end of the 2019-20 season in June. So Leo Messi wished a transfer from Football Club Barcelona at the end of the extended 2019-20 season in September, due to the Corona Virus pandemic. But Bartomeu and Co. actively denied his request by using the argument of season-ending at September, not June. Also, he was reluctant to leave the legend of Camp Nou for free. But instead of handling the matter delicately, Bartomeu took on offense leading to several disagreements and arguments. Messi had no option but to drag the matter to court. But he decides not to drag the club he grew up into court. He decides to extend his stay.
Since then Messi is actively speaking against the board. At the departure of Suarez, he even criticized the inefficiency and indecent behavior of the board. Many other legends of Barcelona also let their dissatisfaction known after that.
Will Messi stay in Barcelona?
The question mark on the future of Lionel Messi is still not out of context. Come January, he becomes a free agent. He can negotiate with any club to join them for free and according to reports. Manchester City has already prepared for that. It will take a mammoth effort by the new President to convince him to stay.
But in my opinion, even if he decides to stay in the January transfer window, he won’t be there at the end of the 2020-21 season. As the building project of Barcelona might take more than two years, he would not want to be a part of a long project provided his age. The new Barcelona project will have to make a system without Leo Messi at the focal point after so many years.
There would be no signings to be made in this transfer window as elections will happen during that time. . Laporta and Font, favorites to be president, have both expressed their will to emphasize the revival of La Masia, the fabled youth academy.
Major signings can only take place if players are sold. so we can expect young players to be given more opportunities.
