“Attack wins you games, Defense wins you championships “– Sir Alex Ferguson

Though most of the footballing superstars are on the other end of the pitch, defenders are the ones who get the job done. And with superstar defenders in scarcity in FIFA 21 and most of them being overpriced, we take a look at the top 5 young center-backs you could sign on a relatively cheap deal.

We have sorted the players based on their OVR (overall rating), POT (potential rating) and the price and ease of doing business with the selling team. Maximum allowed age is kept at 23, allowing the player time to blossom into a defensive stalwart.

5. Ozan Kabak

·        Club: Schalke 04

·        Positions: Centre-back (either side); defensive midfielder

·        Age: 20

·        Height: 6’1″

·        Foot: Right

·        Nationality: Turkish

·        Release clause: €45m (from July 2021)

With an OVR of 77 and a POT of 87, Kabak is easily one of the best young center-backs in the Bundesliga. He should be available for around 50m, however Schalke FC might be hesitant to let him leave, seeing as he is their starting defender.

4. Jean-Clair Todibo

·        Club: Benfica (on loan from Barcelona)

·        Position: Centre-back (right)

·        Age: 21

·        Height: 6’3″

·        Foot: Right

·        Nationality: French

·        Release clause: €20m (in July 2021 for Benfica)

Todibo stands out as an excellent option for those owners who want a relatively taller defender to win the aerial duels. Having an OVR of 75 and a POT of 86, Todibo is an athletic defender capable of winning duels in both the attacking and defending phase of the game. He should be available for around 40m, seeing as Barcelona don’t see him as a starting defender.

3. Ethan Ampadu

·        Club: Sheffield United (on loan from Chelsea)

·        Position: Centre-back (either side); defensive midfielder, right back

·        Age: 18

·        Height: 6’0″

·        Foot: Right

·        Nationality: Wales

·        Release clause: None

Ampadu starts off with a pretty low OVR of 67, however given a few seasons as a second choice CB, he can develop into one of the best centrebacks in FIFA 21, with a healthy POT of 86. His price tag should also be considerably lower as he is way below the pecking order at Chelsea and he should be available for 25-30m.

 2. Dayot Upamecano

·        Club: RB Leipzig

·        Position: Centre-back (either side); defensive midfielder

·        Age: 21

·        Height: 6’1″

·        Foot: Right

·        Nationality: French

·        Release clause: €42m (in July 2021)

Another centreback from the Bundesliga is the highly rated French defender, Upamecano. With an OVR of 79 and a POT reaching upto 90, Upamecano could be the defensive solution for your ultimate team. Negotiations with RB Leipzig will be tough, but they are a selling club and will sell for the right price which should be around 60-70m.

1.    Matthijs de Ligt

Club: Juventus

Position: Centre-back (either side)

Age: 21

Height: 6’2″

Foot: Right

Nationality: French

Release clause: None

At this point we are unsure if we can include de Ligt among the potential centrebacks, keeping in mind his excellent displays in the Serie A. With an OVR of 85 and a POT rising up to 92, de ligt could very well be the best CB in the game. Negotiations with Juventus would be tough, however if you manage to pull off this deal, de Ligt could make the difference in your team, come Champions League nights.
