Donny van de Beek’s Manchester United career has not gone according to plan. He has been made to stay on the bench for the most parts by his manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Even Paul Pogba has been extensively used as an impact sub by the Manchester United manager in recent weeks. Solskjaer has plenty of options for the midfield this season, who more often than not chooses to play a team with three midfielders in it. Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes is the first name on the team sheet hence leaving two midfield options for which Solskjaer has plenty of players to choose from. More often than not Donny van de Beek has to lose out on those spots.
During the second half of a match against Chelsea, owing to the absence of attacking options such as Anthony Martial, Edinson Cavani and Mason Greenwood, united opted for a diamond midfield instead of the conventional three midfielders. This provides some hope for Donny van de Beek as there arises one more spot for him to compete for.
Although Manchester United did sign Edinson Cavani this summer but arguably the blockbuster signing of the summer had to be that of Donny van de Beek. Unlike the Uruguayan striker who is just a short term solution, the Dutch midfielder is considered to be a long time solution for United’s midfield. This is all the more reason for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to find a way to make Donny van de Beek fit into the squad.
